Close-ups from Finlandia Trophy: dance, dance, dance!

ShibSibs x Shibuya: A 90s Night in Tokyo, the rhythm dance of Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, has been a beautiful vehicle for them to come back in the competitive arena after a 7-year hiatus – especially when their comeback happened on Japanese soil, in Osaka, at 2025 NHK Trophy.

Two weeks later, they competed again on the Grand Prix series, in Helsinki, at 2025 Finlandia Trophy – and that’s where this energetic photo was taken.

We loved this rhythm dance, a part of their journey, their Asian American heritage, and we chose to start our photo-recap of the ice dance event in Helsinki with the ShibSibs in Shibuya; for US Nationals this January, Maia and Alex have another rhythm dance ready, to music by Jamiroquai.

Another ice dance program that ran away with our attention during this season, the Olympic season, is Olivia Smart and Tim Dieck’s incredible Dune Part Two free dance – a praise-worthy sequel of the free dance that had some many skating fans in awe the previous season.

And for a sequel to be as good as the initial program, that’s rare – but Olivia, Tim and their entire coaching and choreographing team really made it work, and made it a highlight throughout the season, in Helsinki as well.

And they’re so many photos in this recap that capture the emotions of this magnetic Dune performance.
