No doubt, one of the biggest stories of 2022/2023 season – we dare say, the biggest – has been Ilia Malinin landing the first quad Axel in competition.
We knew he had it in him, we saw videos of him landing this almost impossible jump in practice, but Ilia made it a mission to land it in an ISU-sanctioned event, and enter the history of the sport.
Which he did, first at 2022 US Classic in Lake Placid, only to showcase it later in every competition he took part in. And 2022 Grand Prix of Espoo, Finland, was no exception to it.
